Lady Liberty’s face was uncrated on Liberty Island in 1885. Her face is said to have been modeled after sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi’s mother, Charlotte.
During an extensive restoration which was completed in 1986 the new torch was covered with thin sheets of real 24k gold.
The seven rays on her crown represent the seven seas and seven continents of the world, each up to 9 feet (2.5m) in length and weighing about 150 pounds (68kg).
Her left hand holds a tablet that measures 23′ 7″ x 13′ 7″ (7.2 x 4.1 m). The embossed text on it is the date of the Declaration of Independence. JULY IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776)
When the Statue of “Liberty Enlightening the World” was completed, it not only represented the American independence but also symbolized the end of all types of servitude and oppression. A broken shackle and chain lie at the Statue’s right foot.
